The Folly standing on top of Castle Hill known as the Victoria or Jubilee Tower, was built as a monument to Queen Victoria's then sixty year reign, longer than any other Monarch on the English throne. It was oficially opened in 1899 by the Earl of Scarborough. The Tower is built on the site of an early Iron Age hill fort, which was in use around 555BC, although there is archeological evidence to suggest the area was settled as far back as the Mesolithic Age. Around AD43 the forts defences were improved, probably in answer to the news of the invading Romans. Later in its History, Castle Hill became a location for political rallies by the Chartist movement, and gatherings took place in 1843 and 1848. During the great weavers’ strike of 1883 a rally of between two and three thousand people braved bitter weather to listen to speeches by union leaders. The Victoria Tower acts as an instantly recognisable landmark to the people of Huddersfield and the surrounding areas.
