This image is exclusive to Alamy. Nottingham Playhouse was opened in 1963. The architect was Peter Moro who had worked on the interior design of the Royal Festival Hall interior in London. Its modern design was initially controversial as it faces a Roman Catholic cathedral, though the Playhouse received a Civic Trust Award in 1965. The auditorium walls are circular, though the theatre has a conventional stage layout. there is seating for 770 over two tiers. In 1996 it was made a Grade II listed building and in 2004, the theatre was restored and refurbished, with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, following a 1980s style ‘fashionable’ refurbishment. The Sky Mirror by artist Anish Kapoor was erected in 2000 in the refurbished forecourt of the Nottingham Playhouse. The 5.75 metre diameter mirror is constructed from stainless steel and reflects on both sides.
