Howard Hughes acquired the peak and surrounding acreage in the 1930s with plans to build a house for his love interest, actress Ginger Rogers. She refused the offer, so the area was left undeveloped. The sign was erected in 1923 originally named Hollywoodland to advertise a housing development. The LAND was removed in 1949. A disappointed actress Peg Entwhistle committed suicide when she jumped off the letter H some 45' tall. Cahuenga Peak is the 12th highest named peak in the Santa Monica Mountains and is located just west of the Hollywood Sign and Mt Lee. It provides a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the Los Angeles Basin and the San Fernando Valley for those hikers willing to climb the road-less peak.
