The attractive Andalucian town of Bornos is situated in the Sierra de Cadiz in the north of the Spanish province. With a backdrop of a cerulean blue reservoir set in lovely countryside the town is relatively unsung outside of the province but is well worth a visit. It offers history, culture, scenery and good eating based on fine, locally grown produce. The site is thought to have been first settled over 30, 000 years ago but in more recent centuries Arabic and Roman cultures have left their mark. Moorish architecture dating to the 10th century can be seen in the remains of the fortified tower that would later become the Fontanar castle.Adjacent to that on one side is the 15th and 16th Century Palace of Los Ribera. Built in the Renaissance style it has cloisters, a loggia and some delightful, Italian inspired gardens.Sitting in the shady trees or tiled summerhouse it is a peaceful haven from which to contemplate nature and enjoy the Spanish sun. Understandably the Palace and gardens is a Site of Cultural Interest. On the other side of the castle the four sided tiled square of The Plaza Alcalde Jose Gonzalez is a public space in which to sit and converse with passers by. The precinct and the impressive Santo Dominingo de Guzman Church can also be admired from the tower of the Fontanar castle with its entrance via the museum. Beyond these buildings can be seen the reservoir that plays an important role in town life. As well as providing water the banks grow plant materials that are woven into baskets. This artisan craftwork has been particularly important in the area for many centuries. Olive wood and leather pieces and ceramics are also crafted locally. The village has its own robust cuisine based on local produce.
