The Niederwald Monument with its statue of "Germania" was built in the years from 1877 to 1883. The 38 m high (114 feet) monument was meant to commemorate the Franco-German War of 1870-1871 and the re-establishment of the German Empire. The Monument was the basis for modern tourism. In order to do justice to the numerous visitors who wanted to see the monument, in 1884 a rack railway was built, the forerunner of today's cable-car, which transported the visitors through the vineyards to the monument. ' The rack railway was replaced by the cable-car in 1954. Since then, more than 30 million people from all over the world have glided in 2-person cars over the vines on their way to the Niederwald Monument.
