Private security firm closes off and guards a second abandoned Hebrew University dormitories building from threat of homeless squatters. Jerusalem, Israel. 06/09/2011. Some 33 homeless families broke into an abandoned building in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Kiryat Yovel, on 61 Yair Stern Street, Thursday, September 1st. These previous residents of tent cities declared the building, belonging to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, their new home, waving a new slogan - "Homes without people for people without homes" - the building served as dormitories for university students in the past but has been empty for at least four years. Squatters spread out in the vacant apartments, cleaned up the building and got connected to water and electricity. The Hebrew University filed a formal complaint with police Sunday and squatters were presented with a 48-hour eviction notice, expiring today. The new building residents have partially fortified the entrance expecting a forceful police eviction some time today. If evicted, homeless squatters say their next residence will be City Hall.
