Former chairman of the National Comsumers Council Michael Young. 16/1/02: Prime Minister Tony Blair led the tributes to social reformer and educationist Lord Young of Dartington, who has died aged 86. * As Michael Young, the peer was a key figure in the post-war Labour Party, writing the party's manifesto for the 1945 election, in which Clem Attlee won a breakthrough victory leading to the creation of the modern welfare state. A man of wide interests and immense energy, Young co-founded the Open University and founded the Consumer's Association, as well as the magazine Which?. His son, the writer Toby Young, said his father had died on Monday night at his home in London. He had suffered from cancer for several years but had remained active right to the last, said Mr Young.
