Old house from 1738 and in the background the Big Tower. Christiansø is a tiny (22 hectare) island a couple of hours sailing out of Gudhjem. In 1684 king Christian V a seafort on the island, which is still owned by the Ministry of Defence. No cars are allowed on the island, which have about 100 inhabitans, living in the old romantic stone houses, built by king Christian for his soldiers. The island functioned as a military installation until 1855. Some 60 - 80.000 tourists visits the island per year. The Big Tower is with its many canon holes the islands main fortification and is 25 meter in diameter with 6 meter thick walls. The lighthouse on the top of tower was added in 1805. Everything on the island - from buildings to even the vegetation is listed
