APRIL 23rd: Two of the world's greatest writers died on this day in 1616: the Spanish novelist, playwright and poet Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra (the creator of Don Quixote); and the English playwright and poet William Shakespeare, who it is believed was also born on this day in 1564. Martin Clayton, curator of the print room in Windsor Castle, prepares Charles I's own copy of the complete works of William Shakespeare, ahead of an exibition starting this weekend to mark the 400th anniversary of the Union of the Crowns at Windsor Castle, Berkshire. Visitors to Windsor Castle are to be given a glimpse of the drawings, books and documents collected by the Stuart kings and queens during their 100-year reign. The collection, owned by the Queen, much of which is being seen by the public for the first time, reflects the violent political upheaval of the age that shaped the Britain in which we live today as well as the Stuarts' flourishing court culture.
