Photograph of the mill in Upminster Essex, believed to have been built in the 1700s. The mill was used up to 1927 owned by several owners, when it was badly damaged by a lightning strike in a severe thunderstorm. After that it had remained unused until 1937 when it was purchased by Essex county council, who intended to demolish it and develop the site. The mill was saved after a public out cry. After the second world war there have been several attempts to refurbish the mill. The friends of the mill were formed in 2001 who are currently carrying out repairs. Earlier in 2011 they have managed to get the top cap rotating, and are due to carryout more renovations in the coming years.
