Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City, the American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific, educational, and cultural institutions. Founded in 1869, the museum encompasses 45 exhibition halls, covering an area of 2 million square feet, and hosts more than 5 million visitors annually. The museum’s collections contain over 34 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, and human cultural artifacts, only a small fraction of which can be displayed at any given time. Notable exhibits include the dinosaur fossil collections, the Hall of Ocean Life with its impressive blue whale model, and the Rose Center for Earth and Space, which features the Hayden Planetarium. The museum is also a major center of research and education, providing programs and resources for teachers and students, and conducting more than 120 field expeditions each year. It continues to publish significant scientific and popular works, maintaining its influential role in natural science research. The exterior of the museum is as notable as its interior, bordering the Theodore Roosevelt Park. The museum's buildings represent a variety of architectural styles, from the original Victorian Gothic design to the more modern Rose Center, creating an interesting juxtaposition that reflects the museum’s long history.
