In 1917 the construction of the three-mast schooner 'the Oosterschelde' started by order of the Rotterdam shipping company. It was put into service as a sailing freighter along the coasts of Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and Northern Africa. The Oosterschelde was owned by several Scandinavian, firstly under the name of Fuglen and later on Sylvan, until it eventually was taken under supervision by three nautical museums which restored the ship between 1988 and 1992. The costs were paid for by the Rotterdam business community, local & national authorities and quite a few private investors who joined forces in the foundation 'Het Rotterdamsche Zeilschip' that was especially founded to support this cause. Nowadays, it sails all oceans and is known as the world most adventurous Tall Ship and Holland's only authentic three-mast ship. The Oosterschelde is a three-masted schooner from the Netherlands, built in 1918. She is the largest restored Dutch freightship and the only remaining Dutch three-masted topsail schooner. Her home port is Rotterdam.
