Informations supplémentaires:
The Palace of Culture and Science (Palac Kultury i Nauki, abbreviated PKiN), including a 43 m high spire, is the tallest building in Poland and, at 231 m (758 ft), the eighth tallest building in the EU. Built 1952-1955, it was conceived as 'gift from the Soviet people to the Polish nation'. It is a mix of Stalinist architecture, Polish architectural elements and inspirations from American art deco skyscrapers. The Rolling Stones gave a concert here in 1967, the first by a major western rock group behind the Iron Curtain. Four 6.3 m clock faces were added to the top of the building for the Millennium Celebrations in 2000. The building currently houses four theatres, a multiplex cinema with eight screens, two museums, offices, bookshops, a large swimming pool, an auditorium hall for 3000 people and an accredited university on the 11th and 12th floors. The Observation Terrace on the 30th floor, at a height of 114 m, gives excellent panoramic views of the city. The Palace's exteriour is surrounded by many monumental sculptures in the classical style. This idealised worker, one of the most famous, holds a Ten Commandment-style book inscribed with the names of Marx, Engels and Lenin, Stalin's name being carefully erased after 1956.
