Painted Lady Butterfly, upper wings have salmon - pink background coloured with patterns of black, white spots. The underwings are marbled with buff, white and brown the forewings are tinged with pinkish buff. Occurs throughout Europe. It prefers fields and downs but sometimes visits garden flowers. It is a fast flier particularly when disturbed but often returns to its original spot. Painted Ladies are continuously brooded but survive the winter only in the extreme south.
