Lieu:
Hora village, Cythera (or "Kythira") island, Greece, Europe
Informations supplémentaires:
The Hora of Cythera (or "Kythira") island with its Venetian castle on top of the hill to the right around, sunset."Hora" is a very common name for villages or towns in the Greek islands. It means the "capital" of each island. The Hora of Kythira became the capital of the island in the 16th century, when Palaiohora (means "Old Hora") or "Aghios Dimitrios" the former capital of the island since the byzantine years and the 13th century, was completely destroyed in 1537 by the infamous pirate, Barbarosa. There was a small castle on the hill above Hora constructed by the Byzantines since the 13th century, but it took its final shape and form in the 16th century during the Venetian ocupation of the island. During the last 2-3 centuries the village started expanding outside the walls of the castle. Walking in its picturesque alleys is a very pleasant and atmospheric experience. You can enjoy its unique architecture , which is an unusual "blend" of Venetian, Cretan and Aegean elements. Here you can see the neighborhoods of Mesa Bourgo and Belvedere.
