View c. 1880 of Menai Suspension Bridge over the Menai Strait in its original form with a wooden road surface linking the Isle of Anglesey with mainland Wales near Bangor, Gwynd. Designed by Thomas Telford it was one of the world's first suspension bridges. Work started in 1819 on the masonry limestone towers and it was opened to horse-drawn road traffic in 1826. Wrought iron chain cables linked the 176m (577 ft) span. The road surface was replaced with a steel deck in 1893. The original chains were replaced with steel ones in 1938-9 (note that the the centre two cables were dispensed with leaving the two outer replacement cables to support the roadway) - a nineteenth century sepia photograph.
