Portrait of friends, Liam Duran (28) and Juani Santos (64) in Matanzas, Cuba in the front of Cuban revolutionary motto "Hasta La Victoria siempre". There is a big age difference between them, but they get along great, because they have something in common - they are both transgender men, born as women. Juani is one of the oldest documented transgender man in Cuba, who knew he was a boy since he was 5 years old. He was one of the first transgender individuals in Cuba who had gender reassignment surgery when he was 61 years old. Liam transitioned when he was 25 years old. Juani got his reassignment surgery thanks to the great support of Mariela Castro, President Raul Castro’s daughter, who is director of the government’s National Center for Sex Education called CENESEX, National Assembly member and she’s a leading advocate for the gay and transgender community in Cuba.
