Reigate Heath in the foreground is a site of Special Scientific Interest SSSI. The heath comprises 51ha of extensive sandy heath gorse and heather, and is home to the Spider Hunting Wasp, which burrows in the footpaths. Other local flora and fauna include Alder Buckthorn, Wild Foxglove Digitalis Purpurea, Stonechat, the Small Copper Butterfly, Adder, grass snake, common lizard and slow worm. Reigate Heath is the site of seven Bronze Age burial mounds, called Tumuli or Barrows. These are on the higher ground overlooking the Heath and were excavated in the 19c to discover cremation pots. The Greensand Way - a popular walking path crosses Reigate Heath next to the windmill.
