There's a lot to discover along the Industrial Heritage Trail, a 400 kilometre round trip through the Ruhrgebiet. Blast furnaces, gasometers and pithead towers still dominate the face of the area. But the former production sites - many of which are now listed, have long been given a new life as attractive industrial and cultural sites which draw tourists from far and wide. The roads linking the major venues along the Trail are dotted with special signposts, this is the one which is to be seen on motorways leading into the Ruhrgebiet. The Ruhrgebiet, in particular Essen is going to be the European Cultural Capital in 2010. (courtesy of Regionalverband Ruhr www.rvr-online.de)
