Informations supplémentaires:
The Ice Plant building on Blossom Street, Ancoats, was originally built in c.1860 for the storage of fruit, vegetables and fish and had an attached Ice Making plant from which it acquired its name. In the 1880’s the immigrant Italian community in Ancoats took great advantage from the Ice Plant’s surplus ice with over 70 ice cream barrow businesses found in the area. Now converted to apartments and retail space. The shadows are of the five 'sentinels', inset with artworks by Ancoats artist-in-residence, Dan Dubowitz, and in its centre is a sunken area for performance and play. The name of the square and the inspiration for the artworks comes from the rich history of the textile industry in Ancoats - this outdoor space was where factory workers once cut large swathes of material.
