Shipping containers are converted into shops by enterprising men and women seeking self-sufficiency. Here we see 'Andy's Barber's Shop', at a street corner not far from the Visitor's Centre in Langa Township. In the tradition of old, before the advent of safety razors, it offers shaving as a mainstay income. the day is gloomy and the time of year winter, so the 3 youths around the doorway of the barber's shop wear thick jackets, hoods up hands in pocket. To the side, there is the base of a large security floodlight from apartheid days. Across the road, in a neat row of bungalows, a house is being privately upgraded with a breeze-block garage extension. Residents were given the incentive to improve their homes in 1994, when, after the ending of apartheid rule, Black South Africans were allowed to buy property again.
