The city of Leon in Nicaragua is much more liberal and relaxed than the more conservative Catholic Granada in the south west and the capital Managua. Leon is the seat of Nicaragua's first university, founded in 1680, and the centre of its cultural life Leon was also supportive of the Sandinistas [FSLN The Sandinista National Liberation Front (Spanish: Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional)] during the war and there is evidence to this effect all over the city, with graffiti and street art expressing support for the FSLM 2, the recently reformed party campaigning before the elections. The FSLN remains the country's leading political opposition to the current governing Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC). Despite the fact that the FSLN is no longer the rling party in Nicaragua, its revolution impacted many facets of Nicaraguan society and its legacy has still left a lasting impression in the country
