The Badger, which is is related to the Otter, Weasel, Stoat, Pine Marten and Polecat, is the UK’s largest native carnivore, measuring almost a metre in length and weighing around 11kgs. The total British population is estimated at approximately 300, 000 animals living in 50, 000 social groups or clans. Badgers and their setts are protected under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992. Badgers are often encountered on construction and development projects and a licence from Natural England is needed if any work that might disturb them is planned close to their setts. Heavy fines, confiscation of equipment and prison may be imposed where contractors ignore the law. Where damage or destruction of badgers' setts or habitats is unavoidable, a licence may be granted to relocate them elsewhere. Such relocations, if carefully planned, are often suprisingly successful and badger families will happily take up residence in their new homes.
