Severndroog Castle is a 60-foot high Gothic style triangular, brick-built tower designed in 1784 by Richard Jupp for Lady James of Eltham as a memorial to her husband, Sir William James. It was named after Severndroog Island on the Malabar coast of India where Sir William had destroyed a pirate stronghold in 1755. The castle and surrounding area was purchased by the LCC in 1922 and proved very popular as the focus of a recreational area. Ownership passed to Greenwich Council who were unable to afford the upkeep and the castle was closed and boarded up in 1988. It became vandalised and, after the defeat of a proposal to lease it to a property developer for use as offices, the Severndroog Castle Building Preservation Trust was set up in 2002 to restore the building and open it to the public. The castle is listed Grade II*.
