Born William Forrest Andrews in Huntsville, Texas, Forrest is the younger brother of the late movie actor Dana Andrews. Among Forrest's notable films are So Big, for which he won the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actor, The Longest Day, North Dallas Forty, and Mommie Dearest. Forrest's television credits include the title role of the British crime drama The Baron, The DuPont Show with June Allyson, S.W.A.T., Hollywood Wives, Rod Serling's hour-long The Twilight Zone episode The Parallel (as well as Serling' Night Gallery segment "The Waiting Room") and Dallas, in which he played an impostor pretending to be Jock Ewing. It was initially planned to introduce the character as a permanent replacement, but the change did not go over well with audiences and the storyline was written out of the show. Forrest has had cameo roles in Spies Like Us, Amazon Women on the Moon, and the movie version of S.W.A.T.. Forrest has been married to Christine Carilas since 1949, and they are the parents of three sons. Forrest holds the distinction of playing the only character to have twice been "killed" by Marshal Dillon on Gunsmoke. In episode #480, "Mannon" [named after the character Forrest plays], he shoots Festus and leaves him to die and steals the deputy's mule to make his way to Dodge where he plans to kill Dillon. Finding the marshal gone, he terrorizes the townsfolk and ultimately brutally beats and abuses Miss Kitty, setting the stage for the final confrontation as Dillon arrives. The expected shootout soon takes place, yet without the conclusion Mannon expects as Dillon shoots him (after being shot first) just before the end credits roll. Then over 18 years later in the first Gunsmoke "reunion" movie Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge, it is explained that instead of actually dying, Mannon was arrested and has spent 12 years in prison. Upon his release he sets out on a trail of vengeance against all those who put him there.
