The Nine Banded Armadillo is nocturnal during the summer in the deep south In spring and fall it can be seen during the cooler parts of the day foraging for insects and a surprising variety of other crayfish amphibians reptiles bird eggs and carrion It uses its long nose to find its prey and then to root it out of its habitat Its nose and ears are the Armadillos early warning system as they have very poor eyesight They will occasionaly stand on their hind legs supported by thier tail to sniff the air to identify a sound Their long claws are used when their nose is unsuited for a job such as when they wish to dig in harder ground or open a rotten log In urban areas they root in lawns for food and leave a yard full of many small craters that the owner finds in the morning The leathery body armor protects it from enemies
