Portrait detail of a British otter (Lutra lutra) shaking the water from its fur as it emerges from a lake. The otter was recently close to extinction through river pollution, loss of habitat and hunting. It now has legal protection and numbers are slowly increasing. This secretive animal inhabits coastal regions, lakes and rivers with a good level of vegetation. They can become familiar with humans in some locations and can often be seen, for instance, in Exeter, near the Devon Wildlife headquarters on the river Exe. This is perhaps due to them habituating to the busy nightlife. The Taw and Torridge rivers in Devon are the setting in for the famous story ‘Tarka the Otter’ by Henry Williamson and more lately in ‘Flow’ an ‘e’novel for young adults by John Insull.
