Thomas Schütte (born November 16, 1954) is a German contemporary artist. From 1973 to 1981 he studied art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf alongside Katharina Fritsch under Gerhard Richter, Fritz Schwegler, and Benjamin Buchloh.[1] He lives and works in Düsseldorf. The sculptural group Vier Grosse Geister is made up of four bronze figures standing over eight feet tall. They remind us of bulging Michelin Men or misshapen mascots. In recent years the Vier Grosse Geister sculptural group has appeared on Der Graben, the famous shopping street in downtown Vienna (2011), and in the grounds of the Villa Schöningen in Potsdam (2010). With the open-air presentation of Thomas Schütte’s Vier Grosse Geister, the Fondation Beyeler continues its tradition of showing art works in public spaces. Children and adults alike will have the opportunity to experience art at first hand in their own environment. The Vier Grosse Geister (2003) will be on show in the cities of Zurich, Geneva and Bern in the run-up to the Thomas Schütte exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler, and in Basel during the exhibition itself.
