The state of the art vessel liaised with the station’s current boat along with lifeboats from their flank stations from Newhaven and Hastings at Beachy Head and paraded along the seafront to the delight of waiting holidaymakers. As she majestically swept into the harbour entrance she was greeted by thousands of flag waving supporters. Coxswain Mark Sawyer later said that he was amazed that so many people had turned out to welcome the volunteer crew home which, he said, demonstrates the fantastic level of support the town has for its lifeboats. Mark added that he was immensely proud to have been given the honour of bringing the new boat home and was looking forward to the lifeboat taking pride of place in the Queens Pageant along the Thames. Eastbourne RNLI Lifeboat Station’s new £2.7 million Tamar lifeboat was named Diamond Jubilee in honour of RNLI Patron, Her Majesty The Queen. The lifeboat took to the water in Plymouth for the very first time on Monday 6 February 60 years to the day that The Queen ascended to throne. Eastbourne has celebrated over 180 years as a lifeboat station. Notable events include taking part in the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk in 1940 and being awarded 10 Medals for gallantry, the last in 2003. The Inshore lifeboat was paid for by the generosity of lifetime RNLI supporter and Shoreline member Louise Hobbs. When Louise sadly passed away in 1999, aged 96 years, she bequeathed part of her estate to Eastbourne RNLI lifeboat station. The legacy was for the specific purpose of funding a replacement for their D-class inshore lifeboat (ILB) when it reached the end of its serviceable life. The new £39, 000 lifeboat, Laurence and Percy Hobbs, is named after Louise’s father, Laurence John Hobbs, and brother Percy, neither of whom are alive today. The lifeboat replaced the old D-class inshore lifeboat Joan & Ted Wiseman 50, which has been on station since August 2003.
