Tower Bridge on the River Thames in Britain's capital city of London at sunset with a cruise boat turning to dock . This is a famous victorian three span bridge with a centre bascule bridge design incorporating a cantilevered road crossing between two supporting towers. A suspension bridge links to each river bank. Shown in its lowered position against an orange sunset sky, the centre road breaks in the centre as each side is hinged to a raised position allowing tall ships to pass or on occasions as a form of salute or recognition . Much of the architectural work and engineering design was carried out by Sir John Wolfe Barry and when it opened in 1894 the bridge was steam driven . City Hall , HMS Belfast , and the red band of London Bridge in the background . HDR image with shadows and sky painted in with both images from same digital exposure with no content alteration
