Informations supplémentaires:
Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) the bole of which, exposed to sunlight, has been marked by a big longitudinal frost crack (Forez crests - nature reserve of the Livradois Forez - Auvergne - France). Those cracks are the result of rough temperature variations. Following a temperature warming in the daytime, plants deacclimatize of their complete winter dormancy. Then, when the temperature drops again rapidly, cells and tissues cannot reacclimatize quickly enough, the sap expands when freezing, causing cell damages and wood and bark cracks.
