A contestant showing sheep shearing skills in competition at the Countryside Experience Day staged by the Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society (RLAS) at Witton Country Park in May 2012. The Royal Lancashire Agricultural society was formed in 1767 and their annual county show is believed to be the oldest of its kind. The society was forced to abandon its shows in 2008 and 2009 due to very bad weather causing the showground to become waterlogged. The £ 0.5 million losses incurred in these successive bad years led to the 2011 and 2011 shows not taking place. This2012 Countryside Experience event in Blackburn is a smaller scale event than the full blown County show and many people will be hoping its success leads to an early return of the County show proper.
