The monument was erected for those who died during the Denmark expedition to north-east Greenland 1906-07. The leaders of the expedition were the author Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (1872-1907), First Lieutenant N.P. Høeg Hagen (1877-1907) and the Greenlandic sealer Jørgen Brønlund (1877-1907). The face of the monument shows a relief of the three men struggling on across the ice and pushing the heavy load that the sledge dogs can no longer pull. The text on the back of the stone consists of notes from Jørgen Brønlund' diary, which was found by his body. The monument was the result of a competition announced in February 1911. Others taking part in it apart from Kai Nielsen included Carl Bonnesen, Elna Borck, Niels Hansen Jacobsen and Holger Wederkinck. The rock was taken up from Flinterenden on the floor of the Sound and ground smooth, but its shape has been preserved. The relief was made on the spot in the open air in the middle of a cold winter.
