Frank Benjamin Manning, known to many dancers around the world as Frankie Manning, was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 26, 1914. He first ventured into Harlem's Savoy Ballroom in 1933. With a love of jazz music and dance Frankie soon became a dance member of a group and choreographer, known as Whitey's Lindy Hoppers. He became known as "Musclehead" Manning, one of the pioneers of Lindy Hop. He created air steps know today as aerials. The name of the dance originated from the transatlantic aviator Charles Lindbergh, when a dancer told a reporter "We flyin' like Lindy!" Frankie Manning appeared in several Hollywood movies Hellzapoppin (1941), Killer Diller (1948), Keep Punching(1939), Radio City Revels(1938), A Day at the Races (1937) were he choreographed the dance groups. In 1947 Frankie formed a new group called the Congeroo Dancers, this lasted until 1955, when he went to work for the US Postal Service. In 1986 he begins to teach and work with 2 enthusiastic dancers, Erin Stevens and Steven Mitchell and in 1987 he retired from the Post Office. Swing dancing grew in popularity and became known worldwide within the dance scene. Frankie Manning became an ambassador of Lindy Hop traveling and teaching though out the world. He celebrated his 89th and 90th birthdays cruising around the Caribbean. Frankie Manning passed away on April 27th 2009, in New York.
