Excerpt from GPO press announcement, 19-Mar-2012: “Mayor Nir Barkat to visit major projects: renovation of community garden in Zur Bahar; renovation of Stern Street; musical event in Gonenim community garden; and community celebration in Messilah Park For the second year running, the Jerusalem Municipality is participating in Good Deeds Day, a national project that encourages volunteerism and working for the community. The project is the brainchild of Shari Arison and the Ruach Tova association of the Arison Group. In comparison with last year, the number of participants in the project this year is 7 times larger (!), with over 5700 volunteers committed to carrying out renovation, cleaning, painting and other good deeds. The activities, which will take place tomorrow (Tuesday), 20.3.12, between 09:00-16:00, will involve volunteers in 48 projects across Jerusalem. The volunteers include 1200 soldiers, 1700 counselors and pupils from various youth movements, students, school pupils, municipal employees and community managers, associations and neighborhood residents. All projects will be headed by the administrators of the operational quarters and the community administrator, under the auspices of Yehudit Zabedtzky, Advisor to the Mayor on Neighborhood Affairs. The largest project in the city will take place on Stern Street in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood, where 700 volunteers, 200 of whom are soldiers, will paint all of the buildings, in addition to landscaping and cleaning. In the Silwan neighborhood, 500 volunteers will paint, landscape and clean around schools in the neighborhood.
