A young Great White Heron is perched amid the tropical tangle of mangrove roots along the South Channel of Largo Sound, Pennecamp, FL. This image was taken from an inflatable rib boat early morning. The Great White Heron is my absolute favourite bird and is truly a Florida Keys bird not ocurring North of the southern everglades. Some consider the species a white color morph of the Great Blue Heron and some support true sub-species status. I like Ardea herodias occidentalis to honor the specie name given by Audubon when he first encountered this most majestic of the great herons. The Great White Heron differs in appearance from the White Egret or Great Egret by its larger size, thicker bill, and thicker more yellowish legs. The White Egret has thin black legs. Even in a black and white image the differences are apparent. Just difficult when you first get started identifying birds.
