Félix Tisserand was a French astronomer and traveller, born at Nuits-Saint-Georges in January 1845. He held a number of posts including director of the observatory at Toulouse and was a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences, a member of the Bureau des Longitudes and he was appointed to the chair of celestial mechanics at the Sorbonne in 1883. He visited Thailand (then Siam) Japan and Martinique as a member of French expeditions making astronomical observations. The moon crater Tisserand and the asteroid 3663 Tisserand are named after him. The inscription on the back of the monument reads: 'A / FELIX TISSERAND / ASTRONOME / MEMBRE DE L'INSTITUT / ET DU / BUREAU DES LONGITUDES / DIRECTEUR DE L'OBSERVATOIRE / PROFESSEUR A LA FACULTE / AUTEUR DU / TRAITE DE MECANIQUE CELESTE / EXPEDITIONS ASTRONOMIQUES: SIAM, JAPON, MARTINIQUE / 1845 - 1896'.
