A female visitor points to an enlarged pictorial postcard on a signboard that boasts Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Florida, is the No. 1 beach in the USA. That designation was for 2011 and was determined by Stephen Leatherman, a university professor who is a geoscientist and has long studied coastal environments. He has been annually ranking the nation's best beaches for more than 25 years and is now known as "Dr. Beach." He rates beaches using 50 criteria including water temperature, air temperature, number of sunny days, rip currents, water color, algae, views, access, seaweed and noise. Beginning in 2016, Leatherman says he'll give extra points to beaches that ban smoking. A beach was retired from consideration on future lists once it achieved the No. 1 ranking, but starting in 2016 the beaches that Leatherman previously rated as tops will again have a shot at the No. 1 slot.
