A Crab spider (Misumena Vatia] captures a bee after laying in wait on a white flower in a Sussex garden. The white females are very difficult to spot due to their colour-changing ability and are often only noticed when struggling with an insect. Females are 9-11mm in length and males are 3-4mm. Crab spiders have a large abdomen that is wider at the rear than the front. Their legs curve toward the front giving them a crab-like appearance, and they also tend to walk sideways. Females vary in colour from white, yellow or green; with a red stripe. They have the ability to camouflage themselves against flowers by changing colour over the space of a few days. The male is darker than the female. Crab spiders are common in the south but less abundant in the north of the UK. They range across the northern hemisphere including North America.
