Baro, Guinea, 1st May 2015: Baro village is be above the proposed level of the Fomi Dam and will be receiving people displaced by the dam. Madou Conde, 53, two wives, 6 children, planted these cashew trees in 2002 and the trees started producing fruit in 2007. The plantation is a good business. His whole farm of 7 hectares is devoted to cashew trees. Buyers come to him from all over Guinea to buy his produce. His father sent his brother to school but kept Madou at home to work with him and told him if he planted cashews he would earn as much as a civil servant, which he now does. Last year production was 2 tonnes. Madou can sell his produce for 3, 000 to 5, 000 GFS per kilo of roasted cashew. He works alone on the plantation and sometimes his children help him. All his children go to school. He knows about the dam and he’s ready to receive the displaced. “If the government want me to give up my farmland to these people then the government should give me compensation for this.”
