Informations supplémentaires:
Gem Spa is a busy, 24-hours, newspaper stand at the corner of St.Mark's Place and 2nd Avenue. The shop has been known by this name since 1957, when the then owners named it after their wives/ex-wives 'Gladys, Etta and Miriam'. It is known for selling authentic New York-style 'egg creams', a chocolate drink consisting of chocolate syrup, whole cream milk and soda water. It contains neither eggs nor cream. One line of thought for the name is that the drink is a cheap version of late 19th century soda fountain milkshakes, which did use whole eggs. St. Mark's Place is a popular shopping destination. A wide variety of retailers includes tattoo artists, vintage clothes shops, punk clothes shops, restaurants and open-fronted market-stalls selling sunglasses, clothing and jewellery, as seen here. The street is lined by red brick tenements, including Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Graffiti Building'.
