Informations supplémentaires:
These are four of what are potentially some of the most recognisable bridges in the world, particularly the Tyne Bridge, the High level bridge was opened in 1849 and was built by Robert Stephenson one of the famous Stephenson family of engineers and designers. Its total span was 1337 feet and was the first major bridge of a 'Bow String Girder Bridge' or wrought iron tied, there is a total of six spans across the water. The Tyne bridge was opened in October 1928, opened by King George and is an iconic symbol of Tyneside. The Swing Bridge was opened in 1876 and uses the original hydraulic machinery though it is now powered by electric pumps. Finally the Millenium Bridge was opened in 2000, it is lit up at night and when it lifts it is said to look like a 'blinking eye' - it is opened just about everyday, either as a demonstration or to let river traffic past.
