Orford Ness National Nature Reserve, an ex Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, now National Trust owned tourist attraction on the Suffolk Coast Orford Ness is a cuspate foreland shingle spit, divided from the mainland by the River Alde, formed by longshore drift. It is a National Nature Reserve, Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA). it is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Ness used to belong to the MOD, at one time the Atomic weapons Research Establishment had a base on site and it was also home to an experimental over-the-horizon radar station known as Cobra Mist. There is a powerful medium wave transmitting station originally belonging to the Foreign Office, now part of the BBC World Service, although broadcasting to Continental Europe on 648 kHz ended March 2011. Orford Ness is now owned by the National Trust and open to the public as Orford Ness National Nature Reserve. It is an area barely above sea level and therefore threatened by sea level rises, due to human induced Global warming.
