Agra is a city of historical significance on the banks of Yamuna River. It became particularly important in the period of Mughal rule over India and was the Mughal capital for a century and a half during the reigns of the Emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. It was captured by British forces under Lord Lake in 1803. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857 the city was considerably damaged by both the Indians and the British thus adding to the deterioration of the once beautiful buildings already in decline after the Mughal Empire had faded. Nevertheless it still contains some fine examples of Mughal architecture and the Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort and the adjacent Fatehpur Sikri are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Mughal palace is seen from the river bank as it appeared in the 19th century.
