Le lieu de création pourrait avoir été l'abbaye de Durrow en Irlande ou un monastère dans la région de Lincolbria dans le nord-est de l'Angleterre (où le monastère de Lindisfarne serait le candidat probable) ou peut-être l'abbaye d'Iona dans l'ouest de l'Écosse -- le lieu d'origine a été débattu par les historiens depuis des décennies sans qu'un consensus ne se dégage.
