In Peru South America about fifty percent of the population live in the towns and villages of the high Andes mountain range. Most are descended from various Pre-columbian people and a large percentage still use Quechua the language of the Inca as their home tongue. Industries in the highlands of Peru consist mainly of mining and agriculture and many of the mountain valley's are extemely fertile. Livestock, ranging from Guinea pigs to Llamas are kept by most families living in these often harsh conditions, and even the poorest will have a little plot of land under cultivation for vegetable growing. Travelling for any distance in the Andes is usually by bus or truck both of which will take all manner of passenger's luggage be it crates of chickens or sacks of potatoes. In this image these people living in themining town of La Oroya have only as far as the local market to go with their home reared porker.
