An NMR scan image of the head and neck NMR imaging is the use of nuclear magnetic resonance NMR techniques to make pictures of the internal structures of the body It uses the nuclei of the hydrogen atom the most common element in the body and a part of all body tissues Radio waves sent at the body make the hydrogen nuclei give off light particles photons which form an NMR signal A computer uses the NMR signal to make an image of the internal body that is as good or better than x ray films One of the advantages of an NMR scan is that according to current medical knowledge it is harmless to the patient It only utilises strong magnetic fields and non ionizing radiation in the radio frequency range Compare this to CT scans and traditional x rays which involve doses of ionizing radiation
