Drawing room and music room of the 19th century composer, William Smallwood (1831 - 1897), now chiefly remembered for 'Smallwood's Pianoforte Tutor', at his home 'Heathfield', on the Sedbergh Road, Kendal, Westmorland & Furness (formerly Cumbria), England. The photograph was captioned on the reverse in 1959 by one of William Smallwood's descendants: "Drawing Room and Music Room at Heathfield, Sedbergh Road, Kendal, probably before 1900. Home of William Smallwood and then of John Smallwood Winder". William Smallwood, who achieved some international recognition with his composition of numerous popular piano pieces, was born, lived and died in Kendal where he was organist of St George's Church for 50 years, from the age of 15 until his death. 'Smallwood's Pianoforte Tutor', still in print, covers the rudiments of music and includes daily piano-playing exercises, scales and a dictionary of musical terms. The photograph is by prize-winning photographer and portrait artist, James Henry Hogg (1831 - c.1900). Hogg, who established his studio at 71 Stricklandgate in the centre of Kendal, claimed like many of his contemporaries to be in the forefront of photographic progress, describing himself in an advertisement in the local newspaper, The Westmorland Gazette, as “Sole Licensee for the Patent Lambert-Type and Chromo-Type”. Three examples of his work were featured in the 31st Photographic Society of Great Britain Exhibition held in 1886. D1340.B6980.A
