Located on the Mediterranean coast of Northern Israel, the city of Acre (Akko) has a turbulent history dating back to the Bronze Age, over 5000 years ago. It is among the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on Earth, and has seen countless invaders, conquerors, destroyers and people pass through. It has survived all of them. Acre was a particularly important place to the Crusaders, was the commercial centre of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, and was the last place in the Levant that they left in 1291. Here we see Pillars Hall of the Hospitaller Crusader Fortress beneath the ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. After the Crusaders left, the entire fortress was buried by sand for centuries, and parts remain unexcavated to this day.
