The Conservatives are committing today to protect funding for British farmers, enabling them to take full advantage of the opportunities of Brexit. In a significant boost to the farming sector across the UK, a Conservative majority government would match the current annual budget available to farmers in every year of the next Parliament. This funding will support farmers as they move away from the EU’s bureaucratic, unfair and environmentally-damaging Common Agricultural Policy. The details for how the money will be spent will be for the Scottish government but on a visit today to Scotland, Michael Gove set out a clear commitment that farmers in Scotland will receive the same level in cash terms as they receive at the moment. Ministers are also announcing the Conservatives will use the opportunity of leaving the EU to encourage the public sector to “Buy British”, in recognition of the quality of British food and in order to reduce our carbon footprint. Michael Gove, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said: “I’m delighted that we can announce that a majority Conservative government will safeguard farm payments for the lifetime of the next Westminster parliament. “That is a five year guarantee and it means farmers and land managers will receive the same level of support in cash terms. “Agriculture is devolved so it will be for the Scottish Government to determine how that money is distributed. “But Scottish farmers can be reassured the total amount of support will be maintained under a Conservative UK government. “Farmers can invest with confidence for the future. That is great news for one of Scotland’s most important industries. “No other party is making this promise and no other country is offering such certainty for its farmers.”
